About Us

The Human Rights Law Society is a group open to students, legal scholars, judges and practicing attorneys who view the law as a vital mechanism governing the relationships of institutions towards individuals in our society and across the globe. The Human Rights Law Society recognizes that law and the theory behind it form the structural backbone of society, a structure that can be changed and influenced to better protect human rights. The Human Rights Law Society is founded on the notions of justice and human dignity – that justice and dignity are profoundly important values inherently indispensable to, and inextricable from, every aspect of the law – and worthy of both advocacy and defense wherever necessary. The mission of The University of Chicago Law School Human Rights Law Society is to provide a forum to broaden the study and awareness of human rights issues at the University of Chicago. As future leaders at a “global” university, it is important to inculcate such values of a progressive and just society and ensure commitment to using the law as a tool for inclusion and not divisiveness.
